Transfer a domain without downtime

The prerequisites, the timeline and the reasons transfers fail.

A transfer changes which registrar manages your domain. It does not change where the domain points, so your website and email keep working throughout.

Before you start

  • The domain must be more than 60 days old and not transferred within the last 60 days.
  • The registrar lock must be off.
  • You need the EPP or authorisation code from your current registrar.
  • The administrative contact email must be current, because approval is sent there.

What happens

  1. You submit the domain and EPP code, and we check eligibility before charging anything.
  2. The registry emails the administrative contact for approval.
  3. Approving it immediately speeds things up. Without approval, most registries complete the transfer after about five days.
  4. For most extensions, a year is added to your existing expiry date.

Copy your DNS records first

If your DNS is hosted at the losing registrar, those records can disappear when the domain leaves. Note them down, or recreate them with us before the transfer completes.
