Domain Registration Agreement

The terms that apply to domains registered or transferred through us.

Applies to: Anyone registering, renewing or transferring a domain.

Draft, pending professional review

This document is a working draft prepared for review by a qualified legal adviser. It is not legal advice, and it is not the final agreement. Highlighted passages mark positions that must be settled before publication.

1. Registry rules apply

Domain registrations are governed by the rules of the relevant registry and, for generic extensions, by ICANN policy. Those rules take precedence over anything in this agreement, and they can change without our involvement.

2. What ICANN requires for generic domains

For generic top-level domains, ICANN consensus policies apply to your registration through the Registrar Accreditation Agreement. The ones that affect you directly are:

  • The Registrants' Benefits and Responsibilities specification, which we make available to you and which sets out what you are entitled to expect.
  • The Whois Accuracy Program, under which we must verify your contact details and may suspend a domain if a verification email goes unanswered within fifteen days.
  • The Whois Data Reminder Policy, under which we send you an annual reminder to check your registrant details.
  • The Expired Registration Recovery Policy, which governs the notices you receive before expiry and your ability to recover a lapsed domain.
  • The Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy and the Uniform Rapid Suspension system, which govern disputes over a registration.
  • The Transfer Policy, which sets the rules for moving a domain between registrars.

3. Accurate registrant details

You must provide accurate registrant details and keep them current. Registries can suspend or cancel a domain with false or unresponsive contact details. WHOIS privacy conceals details from the public record; it does not permit false information, and it does not relieve you of the obligation to respond to a verification request.

4. Renewal and expiry

You are responsible for renewing your domain. We send reminders before expiry and offer auto-renewal, but a failure to receive a reminder does not extend a registry deadline.

  • After expiry a domain may enter a renewal grace period, then a redemption period with a registry restoration fee, then deletion.
  • Restoration fees during redemption are set by the registry and can be substantial.

5. Transfers

Transfers are subject to registry rules, including the sixty-day lock that follows a new registration or a previous transfer, and the lock that may follow a change of registrant. We will not obstruct a transfer away and will supply your authorisation code on request, after verifying your identity.

6. Country-code domains

Country-code extensions are run by national registries with their own eligibility rules, dispute procedures and, in some cases, local presence requirements. ICANN policy does not apply to them. The registry's own terms govern, and we will point you to them before you order.

7. Disputes

Domain disputes are handled under the applicable registry dispute resolution policy, such as the UDRP for generic extensions and the equivalent national policy for a country-code domain. We comply with the outcome of those proceedings, and we will tell you as soon as a proceeding is filed against a domain in your account.
