Free SSL versus a paid certificate

What you are actually buying, and when free is enough.

The encryption is identical. A paid certificate does not make a connection more secure than the free certificate included with your hosting. What differs is validation, coverage and warranty.

Free SSL is enough when

  • You run one site on one domain.
  • Nobody inspects your certificate details before buying from you.
  • You do not need a wildcard across many subdomains.

A paid certificate is worth it when

  • You need one certificate covering unlimited subdomains, which is far less to manage.
  • You want your verified company name inside the certificate.
  • A policy or a client requires a commercial certificate with a warranty.

We will tell you if you do not need one

If free SSL covers your situation we will say so rather than selling you something you already have.
